It’s Personal: The Howard Greive and Gabrielle McKone Photography Collection, 10–21 August 2022, Webbs Wellington

Former ad man Howard Greive and photographer Gabrielle McKone began collecting New Zealand art in the 1980s, but fifteen years ago they decided to focus exclusively on photography. Greive says, ‘Maybe it’s years in advertising but a sharp, single-minded proposition always works. And, for us, that SMP was photography.’ Their home is packed to the gills with photographs ranging from expressive to conceptual, documentary to directorial, but they don’t spread their bets, preferring to collect key figures in depth. This show samples their collection, featuring works by Edith Amituanai, Janet Bayly, L. Budd, Joyce Campbell, Gavin Hipkins, Jae Hoon Lee, Anne Noble, Peter Peryer, and Yvonne Todd. There’s also a cluster of gems from earlier figures: Theo Schoon, Ans Westra, and Gary Baigent. Join us for the opening preview, Tuesday 9 August at 6pm; and for the closing-day talk, on Sunday 21 August at 11am, presented in conjunction with Photobook/NZ, when Robert Leonard will ask Howard Greive about collecting with an SMP.

Peter Hannken, Observation on the frailty of existence, 18 - 22 August 2022, The Window at Bowen Galleries, plus other photographs by Peter. The Bowen Galleries are at 39 Ghuznee St, next to Customs Cafe and are open 11am -5pm Monday to Friday, 11-4 Saturday, 11-3 Sunday.

Joyce Campbell, The Sunken City, 4 - 27 August 2022, Bartley & Company Art. Abstract imagery of austere
urban landscapes and abandoned and sunken cities to advance Campbell’s ongoing exploration of ‘the brittle
city’ and the impact of industrial civilization on our planet and environment. Talk with Joyce Campbell, David Maskill and Geoffrey Batchen, Sunday 21 August, 9.45am.

Peter Peryer Colour, 13 August - 3 September, Hamish McKay. Considered the 'Colin McCahon of the Camera', known for his now iconic black and white photographs of the late 20th century, Peter Peryer began experimenting with digital technology in the early 2000’s, producing much of his work in colour until his passing in 2018.

Hamish McKay presents a selection of these colour photographs made in the last decade of the artist’s long career.
