Photobook/NZ Masterclass 2018

Photobook/NZ is excited to offer a two-day international masterclass in which we will explore the processes of creating and publishing photobooks.
Targeted for artists and photographers who have a photo based project in development, the workshops offer opportunities for each participant to work through the process of how to turn their own body of work into a completed photobook.
Presentations from international guests will explore approaches to concept development, editing and sequencing, design, funding and finding your audience – i.e. getting your book out into the world.
Working one on one and in groups the workshop experience is structured to enable the exchange of ideas and expertise with peers as well as our international and New Zealand guests who are experienced photographers, photobook makers, editors and designers; able to offer practical advice to support the development of projects and inspiration to enable them to develop in new and surprising ways.
Masterclass facilitators and teachers will work across two groups. Places are limited to 10 participants per group.

Katrin Koenning | Australia
Katrin Koenning is a German photographic and moving image artist with a particular interest in our physical and emotional connection to place and environment. In 2016 her first book, Astres Noirs, received the Australian Photobook of the Year Award and was shortlisted for both Prix Nadar and the Paris Photo/Aperture First Book Award.
Jem Southam | UK
Photographer Jem Southam is one of the UK's leading photographers whose work has been displayed in galleries across Europe, the USA and the UK, including the V & A Museum in London. His practice involves patient observation of changes at a single location over many months or years.
Yumi Goto | Japan
Yumi Goto is an independent photography curator, editor, researcher and consultant who focuses on the development of cultural exchanges that transcend borders. She is based in Tokyo and a co-founder and curator for the Reminders Photography Stronghold.

David Cook | NZ
David Cook is a photographer and senior lecturer based at Massy University’s College of Creative Arts. His published photobooks deal with communities in transition. Lake of Coal: The Disappearance of a Mining Township was a finalist in the 2007 Montana New Zealand Book Awards.
Neil Pardington | NZ
Neil Pardington is of Kai Tahu, Kati Mamoe, Kati Waewae and Pakeha descent. His career as a photographic artist has developed alongside his work as a graphic and exhibition designer. Neil is the recipient of numerous national awards for book design.
Bryan Schutmaat | USA
Bryan Schutmaat is a Texas-based photographer whose work has been widely exhibited and published in the United States and abroad. His first monograph, Grays the Mountain Sends, was cited by The Washington Post as one of the best photobooks of 2013. It won the photobook category in the New York Photo Awards, and it was shortlisted for the Aperture/Paris Photo First Book Award.
Carolle Benitah | France
French/Moroccan photographer Carolle Bénitah practice is influenced by her previous career as a fashion designer. Using beads, coloured threads and scissors to alter her family photographs and albums to explore themes of memory and identity. Her book Photo Souvenirs was named one of 2016’s best books by international curator/essayist Yumi Goto.
Anne Noble | NZ
Anne Noble is Distinguished Professor of Fine Arts (Photography) at Massey University, Wellington.
Her recent photographic books Ice Blink (2011)
The Last Road (2014) and Whiteout Whitenoise (2016) are the outcome of extensive investigations into
the imagination and representation of Antarctica.
She is a New Zealand Arts Foundation Laureate
and recipient of the 31st Higashikawa International photography prize (2015).
Anna Brown | NZ
Anna Brown is an award-winning designer and typographer. She is known for her collaborative approach to book design, exploring narrative forms. Her personal research interests sit within an established discipline of innovative book design. Through projects with visual artists and musicians, she investigates the concept of the expanded book in a digital age.
